Emily Blunt is in talks to take the lead role in the forthcoming movie version of Paula Hawkins’ bestselling thriller The Girl on the Train.

The actor would play the novel’s unreliable narrator, an unemployed alcoholic devastated by her recent divorce who whiles away the days riding a commuter train and fantasising about an apparently perfect couple in a house next to the tracks.

But, one night she comes home covered in blood and unable to remember what has happened.

Many reviewers have compared the book to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, which was made into a movie last year directed by David Fincher and starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck.

The Girl on the Train movie will be helmed by The Help’s Tate Taylor and adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson, who wrote Secretary and Men, Women and Children.

Blunt, who bagged a Golden Globe nomination last year for her part in Into the Woods, will next be seen in FBI drama Sicario, for which she won rave reviews at Cannes. Her comments on flatgate were also warmly received.
