We all know Steven Spielberg is obsessed with aliens. From E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to War of the Worlds and even Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the legendary director has defined how we perceive alien invasions, interdimensional beings and government cover-ups for decades.
But what if it wasn’t all science fiction, and instead a way to introduce these unthinkable concepts to the public?
That’s exactly what people are saying about his latest project, Disclosure Day, which has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced in 2024. The film explores the world’s reaction when proof of extraterrestrial life is finally revealed to the public, and many fans have speculated it’s being used to soft-launch an actual “Disclosure Day”.
Internet threads have theorised that the US government secretly financed the film and used Spielberg as a trusted voice to tease a real-life alien reveal before it eventually happens.
Sure, it sounds insane, but NASA’s science division famously sent the director a 20-page letter during pre-production of Close Encounters in 1977, urging him not to make it — so maybe he was onto something from the very beginning of his career?
Emily Blunt reacts to Disclosure Day conspiracy theory
Spielberg himself has fuelled the conspiracy during the film’s promotional run, even stating in the most recent trailer that he believes we are not alone.
“I used to say to myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of this turned out to be true? I’m now thinking, wouldn’t it be wonderful for people to know?” he remarked.
Disclosure Day‘s lead star Emily Blunt has since weighed in on the theory, telling PEDESTRIAN.TV ahead of the film’s release that she’s thrilled by the internet’s feverish speculation.
“I mean, I would love to see a real-life Disclosure Day,” she said. “Because I think whatever they pepper out there, it’s like crumbs, and I think people want the bakery.”
Disclosure Day screenwriter David Koepp weighs in
Screenwriter David Koepp, who wrote 42 drafts of the Disclosure Day screenplay before Spielberg was satisfied, also told P.TV that he is impressed by how the theory has taken over the internet.
“First of all, I would never disabuse anyone of that notion, because it’s a really cool theory,” he began.
“The way the internet works out conspiracy theories, I think, is this sort of art form in itself, so I won’t comment on that ‘cause I don’t want to throw water on it,” he said, before quickly adding, “Yeah, you’re probably right”.
Is the public ready for a real-life Disclosure Day?
Regardless of the theory surrounding the film, Koepp admitted he’s unsure if the public is actually ready for the potential existence of aliens to be brought to light.
“You know, I would love to say yes and that we would handle this well, but I don’t know,” he remarked.
“Eve Hewson’s character says something in the movie, arguing against disclosure, she says, ‘Look at our history with any sudden dramatic change. It’s not good; we don’t handle it well’. A lot of people died just because some people said, ‘Hey, maybe the sun stays in one place, and we revolve around it’, and that caused enormous suffering.”
The Jurassic Park screenwriter pointed out that the world may have adjusted well to the introduction of the internet and AI, but “those pale in comparison to what we’re talking about”.
“I don’t think it would go very well. I think it would get there eventually, but getting to eventually might be painful,” he shared.
