Emilio Izaguirre banned as former Celtic star accuses Honduran football of being corrupt

Former Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre has been banned by Honduran football authorities after accusing them of being corrupt.

The veteran left back returned to his homeland to play for Motagua after two successful spells at Celtic Park.   But his side lost out on the Honduran title on goal difference on the final game when Olimpia clinched their 31st title with a 4-0 win against Marathon.

And after the game, Izaguirre lashed out. He said: "It's a shame what Olimpia have done and how referees have helped them this season. The league here will never improve if this keeps happening.

"I spent ten years in Scotland and this kind of thing doesn't exist.

"I had faith that Olimpia would not buy their way to the title and that Marathon players were professional, but I was obviously wrong."

Izaguirre was hit with a two game suspension from the Honduran FA for his comments as well as a £300 fine.

He was forced to apologise and stated: "I made my comments right after the game had finished when I was obviously emotional and very disappointed.

"I apologise to everyone at Olimpia and Marathon. They were worthy champions so congratulations to them."

Izaguirre won seven Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups during his time at Celtic.

He was also named player of the year in 2011.
