Emiliano Sala search: Blue and white debris found in Netherlands not from Cardiff striker's missing plane

Blue and white debris washed up on the coastline in Rotterdam is not from footballer Emiliano Sala's doomed aircraft, officials have confirmed.

Police and the fire brigade in the Netherlands sent out multiple staff to search for further after an item was discovered on Wednesday, De Telegraaf reported.

However, aviation experts have since confirmed the item found on the Maasvlatke was not from an aircraft despite speculation it might have been.

A spokesman for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said: "Police have been and inspected the item and confirm that it is not a piece of aircraft.”

On Wednesday a Dutch man shared an image of an item he discovered, the exact location of which is unclear, and was told by another on social media to have it checked as part of the search for Sala's doomed flight.

The man who discovered the debris was told how Sala's plane had had blue and white sections, before stating he had had told a fire department official.

This discovery came after cushions found on a beach in north-west France on Monday morning were ruled likely to be from the aircraft carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson.

The items were found at Surainville on the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, around 60km from Guernsey, and investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: "From a preliminary examination we have concluded that it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft."

Footballer Sala, 28, was flying back to the UK after signing for Cardiff City from Nantes in a record deal on January 21 when the plane disappeared over the English channel.

The Piper PA-46 Malibu plane was being flown by the pilot Mr Ibbotson from Nantes in France to Cardiff.

It requested permission to descend before losing contact with Jersey air traffic control.

The family has frequently called for official searches to continue and funds have been raised for a private search which has been under way.

A spokesman for the family said previously: "The family still have some hope, they're looking at this as a missing person, a missing plane, and until they are satisfied, that's the mode that we're in."

There have been frequent tributes to the footballer at games in the UK and France, with moments of silence and applause held at games in his honour.
