Emiliano Sala's parents accuse Cardiff City of leaving him to fly to death 'like a dog'

The mother and late father of Emiliano Sala have criticised Cardiff City for leaving their son "like a dog" following the transfer that led to the forward's tragic death in January.

Having completed a £15million move from French club Nantes to Cardiff just days earlier, Sala was being flown back to Wales from France following a final trip to see former teammates when the aircraft he was flying in disappeared.

The wreckage of the two-seater Piper Malibu aircraft was later found on the foot of the English Channel, where Sala's body was recovered.

The body of pilot David Ibbotson has never been found.

After an outpouring of grief following Sala's death, focus has shifted to the wrangle between Nantes and Cardiff over the £15million transfer fee, a Cardiff club record.

There are also suggestions that the Piper Malibu aircraft should never have been used to carry Sala in the first place at it was unsafe, with questions also rising over the suitability of Ibbotson as the pilot.

A new documentary from BBC Wales, to be screened on Monday, details the anger in Sala's home town of Progreso at what they see to be a lack of respect for the forward.

Sala's father Horacio - who sadly died just a few days after recording - said: "With all the money that had been paid for him, why was it so hard for them to find something safe?

"Why couldn't they?

"But they left him alone. They left him like a dog. They left him, they abandoned him."

Sala's mother Mercedes Taffarel added: "I keep thinking he's going to call, but no."

The Bluebirds - who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season - last month submitted evidence to FIFA claiming that Sala was never registered as their player, a claim Nantes dispute.

A Cardiff statement read: "The status of the agreement between the two clubs is clear: the transfer between FC Nantes and Cardiff City was not completed."

Footballers in France held a standing ovation for Sala at the Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels awards - the French version of the PFA awards - on Sunday night.
