Emiliano Sala's family appoint famous QC to ensure they get justice over Cardiff City striker's death

The family of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala have appointed one of the UK's top QCs in a bid to ensure anyone found responsible for his death is brought to account.

According to the Daily Telegraph , the family have turned to Michael Mansfield to help them secure "justice for Emiliano".

Mansfield has been involved in some of the most high-profile cases in British legal history, and represented a majority of the families of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster during the 2014-16 inquests.

He also represented families of victims at the Bloody Sunday inquiry, the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, and Mohammed Al Fayed following the death of his son Dodi and Princess Diana.

Mansfield is currently representing survivors and relatives of victims at the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, as well as the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse.

His appointment comes amid suggestions Sala's family could pursue a negligence claim over his death.

The Argentine was killed in a plane crash over the English Channel two days after his signing from Nantes was announced.

Sala's body was recovered from the wreckage a couple of weeks later following an extensive search.

Pilot David Ibbotson remains unaccounted for.

A preliminary report into the crash has already been released by the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch, but it could take up to a year before the full findings are published.

Speaking to French newspaper L'Equipe , Sala's mother Mercedes Taffarel said she was desperate to find out the truth as to what really happened.

"We wait to understand why and how he died. Under what circumstances he died," she said.

"I'm angry, yes, that's for sure.

"Anger is terrible. Terrible. And sadness, of course, for all life.

"The investigation is progressing. I think by the end of the year we will know what happened.

"We must have confidence. I demand justice for Emiliano. So, I have to trust.

"Let justice determine if there has been negligence, if someone has made a mistake, and is paying."

Mrs Taffarel's plea for justice comes amid an insistence from Cardiff that the contract signed by Sala wasn't legally binding.

City are set to argue to FIFA that contractual technicalities meant Sala was not cleared to play in the Premier League.

The main alleged hitch surrounded a signing on fee that didn't comply with Premier League rules, although they also claim that certain terms of their transfer agreement with Nantes have not yet been fulfilled.

The Bluebirds have argued that despite unveiling the striker as a Cardiff player, Sala would have had to have signed a revised deal in order to play in the Premier League.
