Emiliano Sala: Police investigate online photos said to be footballer's body

Tributes: footballer Emiliano Sala

Police are investigating complaints that photographs of footballer Emiliano Sala's body have been posted on social media.

The images appear to show the striker's remains at the Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth, Dorset, after he was killed in a plane crash in January.

A detective told the Sunday Mirror: "We're disgusted somebody did this.

"It is a very difficult time for Mr Sala's family and they should not have to endure additional pain this shameful act will undoubtedly cause."

It comes the day after footballer’s father, Horacio Sala, died at his home in Argentina aged 58 following a heart attack.

It is believed the images were first published on social media several weeks ago.

The 28-year-old footballer, who had just signed for Cardiff City, disappeared with pilot David Ibbotson when the Piper Malibu private plane they were in crashed in the English Channel

Sala's body was recovered on February 6 but the body of Mr Ibbotson, 59, from Lincolnshire, was never found.
