Emiliano Sala death: Nantes retire No.9 shirt in memory of striker killed in plane crash

FC Nantes have retired the no.9 shirt in memory of Emiliano Sala after the former striker's death was confirmed.

Sala's body was recovered from the English Channel and formally identified on Thursday evening, almost three weeks after his plane crashed en route to Cardiff.

The Ligue 1 side turned their official website to just a photo of Salah, with the words 'Noue ne t'oublierons jamais, Emi!' which translates as "We will never forget you, Emi!"

The no.9 shirt has now been retired.

President Waldemar Kita told the club's official website: "I do not have the words, it's a tragedy.

"I'm devastated, Emiliano left his mark, which is why, like many fans, I want to honour him again by removing the number nine."

Cardiff also said that the forward will always remain in their thoughts.

The club said in a statement: "We offer our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family of Emiliano. He and David will forever remain in our thoughts."
