Emiliano Sala: Cristiano Ronaldo criticised for ill-timed post after Cardiff striker's disappearance

Cristiano Ronaldo has been criticised for a plane selfie posted whilst the authorities search for Emiliano Sala, the Cardiff striker whose plane disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night.

The Juventus superstar was in Madrid on Tuesday for a trial over tax fraud, which resulted in a settlement being found, including a £16.5m fine.

And presumably on a flight back to Turin, Ronaldo snapped a picture of himself aboard a private jet, adding a series of emojis.

The post angered many, including Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, due to its insensitive nature, even if Ronaldo had no intention of causing offence.

Lineker quoted the post from Ronaldo, adding: “Not the day for this tweet. It really isn’t.”

Whilst Lineker insisted it was ill-timed, he clarified he did not believe the Portuguese star was aware of how the post could be interpreted.

“I’m sure he’s done it without knowledge or awareness,” Lineker added. “But perhaps someone could let him know.”

Ronaldo or his social media team have not removed the post, seemingly unaware of the offence it may have caused.

Meanwhile Guernsey Police have provided updates on Wednesday on the search for the Cardiff City striker, with no sign yet of the plane.
