Emiliano Martinez breaks Arsenal players' silence as Unai Emery returns to management

Unai Emery has been appointed as the new Villarreal head coach.

It's the Spanish tactician's first managerial job since being sacked by Arsenal last November as he returns to his homeland for the first time since leaving Sevilla in the summer of 2016.

He replaces Javier Calleja, who left the club last week after leading them to a fifth-place finish in La Liga this season, ensuring qualification for next season's Europa League.

An official statement via the La Liga outfit's website reads: "Villarreal CF has reached an agreement with Unai Emery for the Basque manager to be Yellows head coach for the next three seasons.

"The manager will be presented on Monday at 12:30pm CEST in a press conference, which is exclusively open to media, which will take place in the Functions Room in the Preferencia Stand at the Estadio de la Cerámica (access by Gate 31).

"In recent seasons, the Basque manager has been in charge of two top-level projects on the European stage.

"After his successful time at Sevilla, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain, with whom he added to his trophy cabinet, winning a Ligue 1, two Coupes de France, two Coupes de la Ligue and two French Super Cups.

"In his last role as manager, Emery took charge at Arsenal FC, with whom he was UEFA Europa League runner-up in the 2018/19 campaign."

And reacting to the appointment is Gunners goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentine was loaned out to Reading during Emery's first season at the Emirates Stadium, but the 27-year-old clearly harbours no animosity to the Spaniard.

Taking to social media, Martinez tweeted a good luck message to his former head coach, thus becoming the first Arsenal player to react to the news.

"All the luck in your new adventure mister," he said.

Emery has since reacted to the appointment.

He tweeted an image of him holding the Europa League trophy accompanied with a one-word message for Villarreal supporters.

"Forward @VillarrealCF " he posted.
