Emilia Clarke will star in Jamie Lloyd's production of The Seagull in the West End

Emilia Clarke is the latest star to sign up for a big role in Jamie Lloyd’s West End season.

The Game of Thrones star will return to the London stage to play Nina in The Seagull, opening at the Playhouse Theatre in March next year.

Anya Reiss has give Chekhov’s drama a contemporary adaptation for the production, moving the action from Russia to the Isle of Man.

Clarke, who this year starred in festive talking point film Last Christmas, played Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway back in 2013; Lloyd’s production will mark her West End debut.

It is the latest in a series of dazzling announcements from Lloyd, who is also set to direct Jessica Chastain in A Doll’s House next year.

His acclaimed production of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring James McAvoy, is currently running at the Playhouse Theatre. In the Standard’s five-star review, Nick Curtis described it as “the most breathtakingly exciting show in London right now”.

It follows an extraordinary year for the director, whose other projects include a revival of Pinter’s Betrayal starring Tom Hiddleston that transferred to Broadway, and a production of Evita that won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical. The latter can be seen again at the Barbican in the summer of next year.

The Jamie Lloyd Company will also offer 15,000 free tickets to the production, with many at £15 for under 30s, key workers and those receiving job seeker's allowance, as part of a commitment to widening access to the West End.

Tickets for The Seagull go on sale today, with the production running from March 11 to May 30.
