Emilia Clarke has revealed she studied videos of Adolf Hitler to prepare for her Game of Thrones finale speech.
Clarke, 32, had to learn two languages – Valyrian and Dothraki – for her character Daenerys Targaryen who gave a victory speech in front of her Dothraki and Unsullied troops after succumbing to the Mad Queen prophecy.
Speaking about the inspiration behind her tyrannical speech she told Variety: “In giving all these speeches in fake languages, I watched a lot of videos of – now it seems funny – dictators and powerful leaders speaking a different language to see if I could understand what they were saying without knowing the language. And you can!
“You absolutely can understand what Hitler’s f****** saying, these single-focus orators speaking a foreign language. So I thought, ‘If I can believe every single word I’m saying, the audience won’t need to be looking at the subtitles too much.’”
Clarke’s character was killed by her nephew, and lover, Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) in the last ever episode which saw her burn King’s Landing to the ground.
She defended Dany’s fate after fans voiced their “disappointment,” saying she “stands by” the decision to kill her off.
She said it was “logical” as it would never be feasible for Dany to “put a kettle on and put cookies in the oven” and then “pop a few kids out”.
“That was never going to happen,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s a Targaryen.”
Clarke, who has played the Mother of Dragons since the very first episode, said she was reduced to tears on reading the final script and walked until she got blisters as she processed the plot.
