Emile Smith Rowe's starring Huddersfield role gives Arsenal a glimpse into a bright future

Emile Smith Rowe is highly regarded at the Emirates Stadium.

The 19-year-old made his Premier League debut in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City and his first start the following week at Everton.

However, he was not going to be able to make his mark in the first team while Arsenal were struggling for form and both he and the club were keen to find a club where he could be assured of 15 to 20 appearances in the second half of the campaign.

Smith Rowe attracted interest from clubs on the continent and in the Premier League but his preference was always to stay in England and he did just that by joining Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

Mikel Arteta on Ainsley Maitland-Niles' position

Arsenal were hugely detailed in mulling options for Smith Rowe. A League One club had been well-placed to take him, only for Arsenal's transition team to discount them after a player in the same position hit a rich vein of form.

That speaks to what is ultimately Arsenal's priority: that these players get game time at a competitive level.

And Smith Rowe has certainly been getting that.

He joined the Terriers on January 10 and did not play in the game the following day. He has, however, started every game since in the heart of the Huddersfield midfield and slowly started to impress.

That good impression evolved into a starring role on Saturday, albeit in a 3-2 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Huddersfield trailed 3-0 after 31 minutes and were staring down the barrel of a humiliating defeat. Step forward Smith Rowe.

He fired home on 35 minutes and then set up Steve Mounie for the Terriers' second before half-time.

Ultimately it proved in vein as they could not find another goal in the second half, but it was quite the display from a 19-year-old keen to show what he can do and stake his claim for an Arsenal fist team place.

As a youngster Smith Rowe has been found wanting before when things have not gone his way in games, but he will learn to adapt to those moments and move on from them.

Against Fulham he did just that.

The Terriers were up against it and Smith Rowe came to the fore.

Huddersfield Examiner reporter Steven Chicken explained how he almost pulled his team back from the brink.

He said: "He grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck when Town were 3-0 down after half an hour.

"I know it has been said that he has sometimes gone missing when things have gone against him in games, but he was totally the opposite here. His quality on the ball was just a complete cut above."

In the Examiner player ratings Smith Rowe was handed an eight out of ten - top marks on the afternoon, with Chicken saying he "scored a fine first goal, set up the second and had another fine effort denied".

If this one performance is anything to go by then Arsenal fans are in for a real treat when the teenager is ready for the first team in the Premier League, which many do not think is far away.
