Emile Smith Rowe called up to England squad as Southgate suffers injury blows with Marcus Rashford out

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has received his first call up to the England senior squad.

The 21-year-old, who scored in a third consecutive Premier League game in the win over Watford on Sunday, comes in as Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse have withdrawn from the squad.

Rashford will remain with Manchester United to continue his recovery after suffering a dead leg against Atalanta in the Champions League, while Southampton's Ward-Prowse is out with illness.

Smith Rowe was unfortunate to be overlooked for the initial squad by manager Gareth Southgate and was set to join up with the Under-21s but will now get his first chance to impress at senior level.

Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are also yet to report for duty but have not withdrawn. Mount has recently undergone dental surgery and will be assessed in the coming days while Shaw is following concussion protocol after a collision with Rodri in the Manchester derby.

England host Albania at Wembley on Friday night before visiting San Marino next week as they look to seal their place at next year's World Cup.

In the Under-21s, Southampton right-back Tino Livramento has withdrawn through injury as has Fleetwood Town's James Hill. Stuttgart’s Clinton Mola and Leeds United’s Cody Drameh have been called up as replacements.
