Emile Smith Rowe already proving he can be the heir to Mesut Ozil and Arsenal's number 10 shirt

Emile Smith Rowe excelling at Huddersfield Town is no shock.

The 19-year-old may not have had an easy start to the season - recovering from injury - but hit his stride once he had returned to full fitness.

Wherever he played, he was making an impact. He impressed in the Europa League where he would show glimpses of the player the Terriers are currently experiencing.

This was even more evident in his outings for the Under-23s, however. Playing as the No.10 Smith Rowe was often the player controlling games. Making quick turns in midfield, bursting runs forward and sweeping balls to his forwards at will, he found his groove in the Premier League 2.

His move to Yorkshire will be incredibly useful not just simply because he's playing games, but because he is being used in the right way.

Mikel Arteta: We were so sloppy

"I spoke to Danny [Cowley, Huddersfield boss] and he told me he'd like to play me as a No.10. or as (one of the) two No.8.s which are both my preferred positions." he told Huddersfield's official YouTube channel.

On Saturday he played a starring role, albeit in defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

He pulled the Terriers back from 3-0 down to 3-1 with his first goal for the club, although he was the beneficiary of a tackle that actually just pushed the ball onto his foot.

Incredibly there were seven Opta-defined key passes played by Town players during the game - the final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball having an attempt at goal without scoring - and Smith Rowe was responsible for three of them, plus the assist for Steve Mounie's goal that made it 3-2 before the break, making him single-handedly responsible for setting up half of Town's shots on target.

Examiner Live reporter Steven Chicken was impressed, and not for the first time.

He said: "The young midfielder was consistently a cut above with his technique on the ball, but more impressively for a teenager, he showed excellent decision-making about when to play a neat and tidy pass, when he needed to drive forward with a dribble, when to lay it off and go for a run out onto the right wing, and when an incisive through ball might be on.

"His showing at Craven Cottage was one of the best performances we've seen in a Town shirt this season.

"If his first three outings are anything to go by then Smith Rowe's contribution is going to be difficult or even impossible to ignore more often than not."

Becoming Huddersfield's main No.10 he will learn much more than he ever would in the Under-23s. This will be vital when he returns in the summer as Arsenal are still without a recognised backup for Mesut Ozil in that position.

What he is doing well, however, is adapting. Rather than staying central, he is noticing pockets of space he can receive the ball in to hurt teams most - showing just how well he is facing the challenge of men's football at this early stage of his loan.
