Emile Heskey names the player who makes Liverpool tick - and what people forget about him

When you talk about the Liverpool front three, Roberto Firmino is often the third man on that list.

But for one former Liverpool striker in Emile Heskey, that should definitely not be the case.

It goes with the territory somewhat. Mohamed Salah has set the world alight since joining the Reds ahead of the 2017/18 season during which he scored 32 league goals.

Another 22 goals in the Premier League last term saw the Egyptian share the Golden Boot away with Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and fellow Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

Mane is the second man often referenced when pundits and fans discuss the Reds' much-publicised front three but once again, there is a clear reason.

The former Southampton forward is not in the same class as Salah from an assists standpoint but the 27-year-old still managed to match Salah's goals output last season despite not taking penalties.

It's no wonder in some ways that Firmino comes third but Heskey says it shouldn't be the case for the 28-year-old Brazilian, who he says is the critical link which makes the whole of the Liverpool attack click.

"The one player who stands out that is now starting to get the plaudits is Roberto Firmino. For years I've been talking about his movement and the way he plays," Heskey, who was speaking on behalf of GentingBet, told the ECHO.

Blood Red: Analysing Anfield - Is Brendan Rodgers responsible for Leicester's good form?

"It's only now that people are saying he is the one that makes everything tick and he really does.

"He is a perfect link-up man but he scores goals as well. He is the link between the midfield and the forwards. Everything goes through him and sometimes people forget that."
