Emil Krafth admits Newcastle 'collapsed' in closing stages against Manchester United

Emil Krafth admits Newcastle 'collapsed' in the closing stages of Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.

The Magpies had been level with the Red Devils until the 86th minute, but late goals from Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford sealed a resounding victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Despite the manner of defeat, Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow emerged with plenty of credit as 28 shots rained down on his goal and even though the Magpies held out for so long, the defeat almost felt inevitable.

And Krafth couldn't hide his disappointment with how the Magpies surrendered defeat on Saturday evening.

"It is very disappointing," Krafth told NUFC TV.

"I think we did a great game for 86 minutes and then we collapsed in the last few minutes.

"At 2-1, we were just running around and chasing the ball and we gave them too many opportunities to score.

"I think we needed to stay nice and tight because I would always take 1-1 against Man U at home before the game.

"Right now I am very disappointed."

Newcastle got off to a dream start when they took the lead after just two minutes.

Krafth played a principal role in the build-up as his low cross from the right-hand side was diverted into his own net by Red Devils full-back Luke Shaw.

"We had a great start with an early goal," Krafth added.

"It was a bit lucky as I was just trying to put it in [the box] and it took a touch [off Shaw] and went in.

"It was a great start but we are very disappointed after the game."

While 1-0 up, Newcastle found themselves in second place in the Premier League table for 21 minutes.

But those hopes were dashed when Harry Maguire nodded home from Juan Mata's corner kick.

"We are very strong at set pieces and we have many good defenders who are good at heading so it always feels not too good when you concede a goal from a set-piece," Krafth continued.

"We just have to learn from it."

Instead, Newcastle's defeat saw them fall to 12th place and they could slip to 13th if Wolves beat Leeds United this evening.

It is Wolves who the Magpies face next and Krafth was quick to switch the focus on to next Sunday's trip to Molineux.

"We just have to continue to work hard and try to put a focus on the next game," Krafth concluded.

"We have to try to forget what happened in the last 10 minutes tonight and move on.

"There are a lot more games to come."
