Emi Martinez experienced 'delayed onset' of head injury in Aston Villa's defeat to Newcastle United

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suffered a delayed onset of a head injury that forced him off in his sides loss to Newcastle United.

The Villa shot stopper was forced off in the first half against the Magpies, who went on to win the game 4-0 in comfortable fashion.

Martinez collided with team-mate Tyrone Mings knee, and underwent a lengthy examination from Villa's medical team. While he continued to play after the initial blow, Martinez was later forced off on 35 minutes for Robin Olson, who conceded a Callum Wilson brace and goals from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

Due to the Martinez injury, a whopping 10 minutes of added on time in the first half, which was when Wilson slammed home his penalty.

Given how big the issue surrounding head injuries has become, it seems almost unfathomable that Villa would let the Argentine international continue after the initial head injury.

However, Villa caretaker manager Aaron Danks claimed after the heavy defeat that Martinez had been cleared by their medical staff, stating: "At that point, I had no idea, other than he had taken a blow to the head. We’ve got very professional medical staff. They went on and assessed him. He was okay to continue.

"Things have changed after that. There was a delayed onset of something that means he’s had to come off. That’s all I know.

"Emi is fine. He’s showered, dressed, changed, walking around and talking to everybody, so he seems okay. The club will monitor that and take care of him in the coming hours and days to make sure that continues."
