Emi Buendia urged to reject "insulting" Arsenal offer to stay at Norwich

Emi Buendia has been told he should reject a move to Arsenal as he owes it to Norwich to get them promoted again.

The Canaries' playmaker has been linked with a switch to Arsenal this month after impressing in the Premier League last season.

Buendia has continued his fine form to help Norwich start the new year atop the Championship table.

And while the lure of joining Mikel Arteta's project at The Emirates may prove too hard to turn down, former Norwich striker Chris Sutton believes Buendia should stay put until at least the summer.

“I would think the fact that Norwich showed great loyalty and faith in him (would convince him to stay),” Sutton told BBC’s 606 programme .

“I think he was playing in a Spanish second division team. They have made him. They have turned him into the player and given him the profile which he has now.

"Extremely talented player. All I have to say is that he has to see this season through. He owes it to Norwich City.

“If I was in his shoes, I would see it through. I would get Norwich back to the Premier League then I would say ‘thank you very much, Norwich City, you have been great for me and I have been great for you.’. And then I’d go on way and everybody is happy."

Buendia would be an ideal acquisition for Arsenal, given he racked up the fourth-highest tally of chances created last season, despite Norwich being relegated.

Only Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold created more, while this season Buendia has scored seven times and assisted his teammates on six occasions in the Championship.

Arsenal could perhaps even negotiate an affordable deal for Buendia, too, which would appeal to the Gunners' hierarchy.

Buendia cost Norwich somewhere in the region of £1.5million in 2018, though Sutton has disagreed with the asking price currently being reported for the Argentine.

“I have seen the figure £15 million bandied about,” added Sutton. “That’s insulting.

"Why would Norwich sell a player who would be such an integral part of getting them promoted?"
