Emerging star Tom Green pens four-year Giants extension

GWS have pulled off a huge signing on the eve of the AFL season, locking in midfield bull Tom Green to a new four-year contract.

Green, 22, appeared set to head into the campaign without a contract for next year but instead opted to take the long-term deal that keeps him at the club until the end of 2027.

It's a massive vote of confidence in the Giants' direction under new coach Adam Kingsley, after the club slipped to an underwhelming 16th-placed finish last season.

Green, a Canberra local who came through the club's academy, stepped things up last year with career-best numbers of 24 disposals and five clearances per game.

"Tom is one of the best young talents in the game and as someone who has come through the Giants academy, we were keen to secure his services long-term and we're really pleased to have done that before the season has started," GWS football boss Jason McCartney said in a statement.

"He's a fantastic player with a drive to succeed and he's had a brilliant pre-season on the training track, which we can't wait to see translate into games over the coming weeks.

"Tom's signature on a four-year deal is a fantastic endorsement of our new program under new head coach Adam Kingsley."

Green looms as a future captain of the Giants, bumped up to the club's leadership group earlier this week despite his young age.

It takes care of the Giants' biggest contract needs but they'll need to get moving on others, including dashing half-back Lachie Ash.

Former No.4 draft pick Ash is out of contract at season's end and could be tempted by a move back to his home state of Victoria.

Green himself could have perhaps been tempted by a move to Melbourne as he is the grandson of Richmond hall of famer and four-time premiership player Michael Green.
