Emergency works start after sinkhole is discovered in Penrhiwceiber

Emergency works are underway on a road in Rhondda Cynon Taf after council workers discovered a sinkhole during routine work.

On Wednesday afternoon, Penrhiwceiber Road, Penrhiwceiber, was closed with immediate effect when the workers came across a large hole beneath the pavement.

They had been carrying out routine resurfacing works on the pavement alongside the B4275. Further investigation showed the sinkhole extended beneath the road on Penrhiwceiber Road, approximately 200 yards south of the Cross Valley Link.

The road was closed in both directions at 5.30pm.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said investigations were being carried out on the road, which would be shut until further notice, with work expected to last several days. It said there would be an update on Thursday.

A council spokesman said: "The emergency closure at this section of the B4275 has now started. The road will remain closed in both directions until further notice. Investigations are now ongoing, and the council will issue a further progress update tomorrow
