Emergency workers witnessed 'distressing scenes' after tragic death of Roger Selway in Ynysybwl, South Wales Police chief reveals

Police have paid tribute to the family of a man who died in Pontypridd on Tuesday "in the most tragic of ways".

Officers from South Wales Police were called to Mill Road, in Ynysybwl, at 7.30am on Tuesday, April 27 following a report of a sudden death and a house fire. The 53-year-old man who died has been named locally as Roger Selway.

Police confirmed that a "firearm had been discharged at the address in Mill Road" but explained that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A statement from the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust on Tuesday confirmed it was called to support police after "reports of a person with traumatic injuries."

Now, South Wales Police superintendent Sarah Lewis has reassured the local community that incidents of this nature are "extremely rare".

She said: "I would like to reassure the local community who have been shocked by the tragic sudden death of a local man in Ynysybwl on Tuesday, April 27, that we continue to provide our full support to the family at is an extremely traumatic time. Whilst I cannot go into the detail of what occurred as that is a matter for the coroner, I would like to remind people that incidents of this nature are extremely rare."

Superintendent Lewis has also paid tribute to the emergency service workers who were called to the scene on Tuesday and were met with "distressing scenes".

She added: "I would also like to pay tribute to the emergency service workers who, confronted with distressing scenes, acted with the utmost professionalism and compassion. Our thoughts are with the family who have not only had to endure the loss of a loved one in the most tragic of ways, but who also have endured upsetting, inaccurate rumour and speculation during the hours that followed.

"We have said as much as we can in these circumstances and I would ask for everybody to allow the investigation take its course and let the facts be confirmed at a future inquest."
