Threat eases from fires south-east of Melbourne and in Latrobe Valley

Fire authorities have managed to slow the spread of two bushfires that had earlier threatened homes and lives south-east of Melbourne and in the Latrobe Valley.

Shortly after 9:30pm (AEDT) authorities downgraded a fire that started in the Grantville Nature Reserve, south-east of Melbourne.

While the fire was not yet under control, a watch and act message said firefighters had been able to slow the spread of the blaze.

It said people should stay close to a building they could shelter in, stay informed and monitor conditions.

Earlier, authorities had issued an emergency warning for the fire, which had threatened homes and lives at Tenby Point and Adams Estate.

An emergency warning was also issued shortly after 4:00pm on Friday for a separate fire at Tanjil South in Gippsland, but authorities have since been able to slow the spread of that blaze.

About 8:15pm authorities said while the fire was not yet under control, the immediate risk to the community had eased, and downgraded the fire to a watch and act.

The bushfire started in Moondarra State Park and was travelling in a westerly direction towards Moe-Walhalla Road.

Residents were advised to stay informed and monitor conditions.
