Emergency warning for fire in Broome, WA

WA fire officials are warning of danger to lives and homes near Broome, in the state's northwest. (AAP)

An uncontrolled bushfire is threatening lives and homes near the popular tourist town of Broome in Western Australia's northwest.

An emergency warning has been issued for the blaze, which started in the suburb of Roebuck and is burning in a northwesterly direction.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes," WA's Department of Fire and Emergency Services said on Friday.

"The alert level for this fire has been upgraded as homes are now under threat."

People in the affected area, which includes Coconut Wells, are advised it is too late to leave their homes and they should shelter in a room away from the fire front.
