Emergency services tasked to scene after swimming incident involving teenager in Cork

A teenager has been taken to hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming in Cork this afternoon.

The boy, aged 14, was swimming with two friends in Guileen, Cork when he started experiencing breathing difficulties.

A member of local Swell Surf School spotted the teen in trouble and carried him ashore on his surf board.

The surf school team administered first aid until the coast guard and an ambulance arrived at the scene.

What to do in an emergency situation

The boy was taken to hospital as a precaution but is not believed to have been badly injured.

Guileen Coast Guard said in a statement: "Tasked at 16.00 today to reports of a 14 year old male taken from the water with breathing difficulties after getting caught in a Rip while swimming with his two friends.

"Thankfully a member of the Swell Surf School saw he was in difficulty and went to his aid. He managed to put the casualty on his surf board and brought him ashore.

"First aid was administered by the Surf team until Ambulance and Paramedics arrived. As a precaution the teenager was taken to Hospital.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and a huge well done to the Swell Surf School member. Don't forget if you see someone in trouble in the water, phone 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."
