Emergency services tackle car fire as major Manchester city centre road closed

Emergency services were called after a car burst into flames in Manchester city centre.

Bus services were temporarily stopped this evening (March 25) when the vehicle caught fire.

Fire crews attended the scene after being called to reports of the fire on Lever Street at 6.36pm.

Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels and breaking in gear to tackle the blaze.

Nobody was injured.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire Service said: "At 6.36pm on Thursday 25 March firefighters were called to reports of a fire involving a vehicle on Lever Street in Manchester city centre.

"One fire engine from Gorton Station quickly attended the scene.

"Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reels and breaking in gear to bring the fire under control.

"Fire crews were in attendance for approximately 30 minutes."

In a tweet, Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Lever Street, City Centre is closed due to a vehicle fire.

Bus services will omit Piccadilly loop, and divert via Dale Street to resume normal route on Lever Street."

Greater Manchester Police tweeted: "Officers responded to reports of a car on fire on Lever Street at 1835hrs today.

"Thankfully no one was injured, the vehicle started to smoke & caught fire whilst being driven.

@Manchesterfire attended & put the fire out. Vehicle is now being recovered."
