Emergency services surprise Cork boy on 10th birthday with sing song outside his home

For kids around the country, birthday celebrations and party plans have had to change drastically in the last number of weeks, but Cork Gardai and fire brigade crews ensured this was a birthday to remember for Rian Stack.

Rian, an honorary Garda himself, has been "through the wars" with health issues according to dad Stephen, and like other children around the country couldn't celebrate his 10th birthday with a party at his house.

Instead, Garda Pat Harrington from the Garda Dog Unit planned a surprise with his parents - one that Stephen said he "had to warn the neighbours about" - as a massive motorcade of Gardai and fire crews came to sing him Happy Birthday.

Stephen told CorkBeo that Rian, like any other child of his age, is "very sociable, and loves having his friends over", so a virtual party with his schoolmates was organised online before the big surprise.

Rian was delighted, with Stephen saying "half of Cork's emergency services seemed to be outside the house" for the unique celebration.

Gardai from Togher, Anglesea Street and Blackrock were among those present, and Stephen hailed the work of the Little Blue Heroes foundation as "phenomenal", saying the family were blown away by the gesture.

"The way they support kids is incredible," Stephen said, recounting how Rian was sworn in at a special ceremony last year.

"The trip to Phoenix Park where Rian was conferred was amazing, there was a full conferring ceremony for the kids with the Garda band, and a huge motorcade to Aras an Uachtaran as well."

Stephen was also full of praise for the local crews who appeared to help the family celebrate Rian's birthday, saying it was great that the frontline staff could take time out of their days to support the family. He also thanked all the healthcare staff who have helped the family over the years for the work they do on a daily basis.

The Little Blue Heroes Foundation is a charity run by volunteers from the Gardai, retired Garda members, and others in the community.

The charity works with families in need who have children undergoing long-term medical treatment for serious illness. The charity are now busy putting together Easter packs for families.
