Emergency services search Ilkeston canal after person reportedly seen jumping in

The emergency services and a police helicopter searched a canal in Ilkeston after it was reported a person had jumped in.

Derbyshire Constabulary received reports that someone had jumped off the bridge in Station Street and into the Erewash Canal at around 10pm on Thursday, August 21.

The National Police Air Service helicopter circled the area while a search took place into the evening.

However, no-one was found.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary said: "Officers were called to reports that a member of the public had seen someone jump into the canal off Station Road, Ilkeston at around 10pm yesterday evening.

“A search of the area took place, assisted by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and the NPAS helicopter, however, nothing was found.

“Due to the nature of what had been reported, a scene was put in place and further searches were conducted this morning but nothing was found.”

Both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service sent appliances to the scene.

A spokeswoman added: "We got a call from the police at 22.14pm. Two appliances from Ilkeston, one from High Fields and Newark attended.

"The incident was left with the police."
