Emergency services rush to the scene after woman collapses and dies on the street of Irish town

A woman has died after she collapsed the street of a busy Irish town in the middle of the day.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Main Street in Portlaoise, Co Laois on Friday afternoon shortly after 3.30pm.

They responded to an urgent call for help after the woman, who was in her 80s, became ill.

She was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise for treatment but passed away.

Gardai say a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and Emergency Services attended an incident on Main Street, Portlaoise, Co. Laoise at 3.37pm on the 1st October 2021.

"A woman in 80s was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise for treatment and later perished.

"A post-mortem will take place in due course."
