Emergency services rush to scene as 'person enters water' at Irish river

A major search operation was launched after a person was reportedly seen entering the water at an Irish river.

The Irish Coast Guard was also called in to help with the operation at Lough Foyle between Co Derry and Co Donegal.

Emergency services were carrying out a search after a person was seen entering the water, local station Highland Radio reports.

Foyle Search and Rescue said it was called to the scene of the "incident" at around 1.44am on Wednesday.

They wrote on Facebook: "At 01:44hrs Wednesday 11th November Foyle Search and Rescue were tasked by the Police Service of Northern Ireland to an incident.

"Our Emergency Response Teams were assisted by the Northern Ireland Fire Service, Irish Coastguard, Coleraine Coastguard and soon after by the Irish Coastguard Helicopter.

"Colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service remained on standby during the incident.

"Our Teams were stood down at 06:00hrs with the incident now classed as a Search and Recovery operation."
