Emergency services rush to scene as body pulled from Galway river

A body has been pulled from a Galway river – one of several discovered in recent months – after a lengthy rescue operation involving several of the city's emergency services.

Gardai confirmed on Monday evening that the remains of a body were recovered from water at Galway's Salmon Weir Bridge.

The Oranmore Civil Defence was front and centre in the rescue operation, which also involved the guards and the fire service.

In a post on Facebook, the group said it has been searching five days a week since December, amid a number of reported missing persons cases in the city.

But the guards confirmed to the Mirror that the cases are not connected.

In a statement, a spokesperson added that "a body was discovered this afternoon Monday, 15th February, 2021 at Salmon Weir Bridge with the assistance of the fire service and An Garda Síochána.

"Due to the sensitive nature of these search operations and investigations, An Garda Síochána will not be making any further comment at this time."

On social media, the Oranmore Civil Defence wrote: "With the news that a third persons remains were recovered, from the river, today, we offer our deepest sympathies to the families concerned.

"Thank you to our volunteers.

"Since December, under the direction of An Garda Síochána our shore search crews have mobilised 5 days a week, in all weather, cold, rain, hail, frost, snow, wind and the odd bit of sunshine.

"Our County drone and boat teams, have worked tirelessly covering vast areas and our neighbouring county Mayo Civil Defence have joined in our efforts using sonar technology.

"We reassure the family of the one remaining missing person that we will continue our efforts until they are located."
