Emergency services rush to gym after man 'falls ill' in swimming pool

A man has been rushed to hospital after he 'fell ill' in a south Manchester gym swimming pool.

The incident, which happened at Total Fitness Altrincham, at around 1pm this afternoon, involved a male understood to be in his 50s.

The lifeguard on duty performed CPR on the man before he was taken to hospital by first responders.

There was a large emergency response to the incident, with ambulance crews, a response vehicle, Hazardous Response Team and an air ambulance in attendance.

The man was treated at the scene by crews and remains in hospital undergoing treatment.

GMP confirmed the medical episode involved a man in his 50s.

And the North West Air Ambulance Charity confirmed they were called to the incident alongside the North West Ambulance Service.

The gym pool will remain closed until tomorrow, November 24.

A spokesperson for Total Fitness said: "On the afternoon of Tuesday November 23, at Total Fitness Altrincham, a member fell ill in the main pool.

"The lifeguard on duty responded immediately to bring the member to safety and commenced CPR.

"The member was taken to hospital by first responders where they are now undergoing treatment.

“The pool is currently closed whilst we reset operations and support our team, it will reopen at 6am on Wednesday 24 th November. The rest of the Altrincham club remains open.

“At Total Fitness members’ health and safety is our top priority and we are grateful that the lifeguards on duty were able to respond swiftly to the emergency.

“Our thoughts are with our member and their family.”

A spokesperson for NWAS said: "We have responded to a medical emergency.

"The male patient received treatment at the scene before being taken by road to hospital.

"The incident was attended by an ambulance crew, a helimed doctor, a response vehicle, and a Hazardous Area Response Team member."
