Emergency services rush to fire in Glasgow high rise building as road shut down

Emergency services have rushed to a fire on the top floor of a high rise building in Glasgow's east end this afternoon.

Firefighters and Police Scotland officers are in attendance at the blaze, which has taken hold in a high rise on Helenvale Street.

A stretch of London Road and Helenvale Street is currently closed to all traffic following the blaze, with the incident still ongoing.

Residents are reported to have been evacuated from the building.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm we are in attendance at a fire in Helenvale Street. We received the report at 13.01pm in one of top floor flats. Nine appliances are at the scene."

One person is receiving treatment for smoke inhalation following the fire.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 1.05 pm on Sunday, 31 October, 2021 police and fire service attended a report of fire within a top floor flat in Helenvale Street, Glasgow.

“A number of people have been evacuated from the flats and the fire has now been extinguished by SFRS.

“One man is currently being treated by SAS for smoke inhalation.“Enquiries will be carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire.”

Glasgow City Council's traffic management team has confirmed the road closure and advised all vehicles to avoid the area.

A statement from the team reads: "Due to a Building fire, London Road is currently closed to all traffic from Springfield Cross to Macbeth Street. Helenvale Street is also closed from London Road to Tollcross Road. Road users are advised to avoid this area."
