Emergency services respond after buses collide in Manchester city centre

Two buses were left badly damaged following a crash in Manchester city centre on Monday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said the buses were full of passengers when they collided on Portland Street near Chinatown.

It is unclear at this stage whether anyone was injured in the crash.

Photos from the scene showed the front of one vehicle, bound for Piccadilly, was completely smashed in.

The entire windscreen was missing.

Another photo showed damage caused to the back of the other bus.

Broken glass was left covering the pavement following the incident.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted about the incident at 5pm, saying: "1 lane blocked on Portland Street southbound outside of the Britannia Hotel. Delays expected, update to follow."

Eyewitnesses also tweeted about the rush-hour crash.

Shaun Farrelly tweeted photos of the damaged vehicles, with the caption: "Portland Street is a bit of a mess tonight."

While Charlie Spargo posted: "Really bad looking bus collision, Portland Street."

Photos from the scene showed ambulance and police vehicles in attendance.

GMP said there weren't any serious injuries and no arrests have been made.

NWAS and Stagecoach have been contacted for comment.

A TfGM spokesman confirmed the collision was causing some disruption at the Piccadilly Gardens bus station.

He said: "Emergency services are in attendance following a road traffic collision. One lane is blocked. Customers are being updated via social media."

A Stagecoach Manchester spokesperson said: “We can confirm that two of our buses have been involved in a low-speed collision on Portland Street around 5pm. Some bus passengers have reported that they have minor injuries, with one customer believed to have a fractured arm.

“Safety is our absolute priority and we are assisting the authorities with their investigation into the circumstances involved.”
