Emergency services race to 'serious' crash on M74 as major road shut

Cops have locked off a carriageway of a major Scots motorway after a 'serious' crash.

Emergency services raced to the M74 near Bothwell Services around 6.35pm on Monday December 21 following reports of collision.

It is unclear at this time what vehicles were involved or what, if any, injuries have been sustained.

The major road southbound has been closed between junctions five and six as police examine the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.35pm on Monday, December 21, officers responded to reports of a collision on the M74 southbound, near to Junction 5 at Bothwell Services.

“Emergency services are in attendance and the carriageway is currently closed."

Traffic Scotland has warned motorists to beware of delays.

A tweet sent by the body at 8.45pm said the road would be closed 'for some time'.

It read: "#M74 southbound remains CLOSED. No entry between J4 and J5 due to a serious (road traffic collision) and will be closed for some time.

"Traffic is being diverted via the #M73.

"Please expect longer than normal journey times."
