Emergency services race to reports of "unidentified item" in River Clyde

A huge emergency response has been seen heading to an ongoing incident on the River Clyde.

Passers-by reported seeing fire crews, police and paramedics heading to the water in Bothwell, and near to the East Kilbride expressway, shortly before 11.30am.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were deployed to a "police incident."

Cops later confirmed they were scrambled to reports of an "unidentified item" in the water but a search turned up nothing.

Drivers were told to expect delays as traffic backed up near the Raith Interchange, amid the emergency response.

Michelle Smith tweeted: "Serious incident at Bothwell at the River Clyde.

"Police, fire engines, ambulances and boats. Avoid the area the traffic is busy.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed they received reports of something in the water.

He added: "A report was received of an unidentified item seen in the River Clyde near Bothwell Bridge around 10.50am on Saturday, 8 August.

"A thorough search has been carried by officers and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with nothing of significance found.

"The search has now been stood down."
