M8 lorry fire: Emergency services battle blaze with smoke 'spilling' onto road

Emergency services raced to the M8 this morning after the cab of a lorry burst into flames.

Police and fire crews were called to the M8, near Harthill services, shortly after 9:30am.

The westbound lanes were closed for a short time due to the fire.  

Traffic Scotland tweeted: "#M8 J5 offslip W/B Vehicle fire, causing smoke across the road. Please be careful when passing."

Photos from the scene show the cab of the vehicle was engulfed in flames with at least two fire engines tackling the blaze.

Motorists are being urged to take care as smoke was billowing across the busy motorway for a number of hours will crews attempted to put out the fire.

One eyewitness said: "Lorry on fire at 09:50 this morning on the M8 near Harthill services."

Meanwhile, another said: "We had to drive through smoke which is spilling out onto the road."

Traffic was said to be at a standstill, however motorists are reporting that it is now moving on the M8.

It is understood that the lorry driver is said to be "safe and well".
