Emergency services race to Glasgow Central Station as rail passengers evacuated after reports of fire

Passengers at Glasgow Central station were evacuated following reports of a fire within the lower level.

Police and two crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service raced to the scene at around 9.30am on Friday.

Firefighters scoured the area to try discover what had caused the fire alarm to go off but found no signs of a blaze.

ScotRail confirmed that the incident had concluded shortly before 10.30am with services returning to normal.

A spokeswoman for the SFRS said: “We were called at 9.29am to Glasgow Central Station and currently have two crews in attendance.

“They are carrying out investigations but no signs of fire have been found.”

British Transport Police also confirmed they were called to the scene following reports of a fire.

Network Rail warned of disruption which was expected to last until at least 10.45am on lower level trains to and from the station.

They tweeted: “The emergency services are dealing with an incident at Glasgow Central. Due to this, trains are unable to call at Glasgow Central Low Level.

“This is expected until 10:45.”
