Emergency services put out 'controlled' fire in North Tyneside scrap yard

A scrap yard fire sparked a visit from emergency services - only to find it was a 'controlled' burning.

Fire crews and police attended the scene on Tuesday morning following reports of smoke in the Backworth area where a HGV was on fire.

But the blaze had been started on purpose by the owner of the property, police confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters from Tynemouth tackled the HGV fire near to Holywest Kennels, in Backworth, North Tyneside, and left the scene shortly before 10am.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Today shortly after 8.50am we received a report of smoke coming from Backworth Scrap Yard in East Holywell.

“Emergency services attended and assisted with a controlled blaze that had been started by the property owner.”
