Emergency services on Millennium Bridge after reports of person in distress

Emergency services rushed to the Millennium Bridge after receiving reports that a woman was on the wrong side of the railings.

Police and firefighters attended the scene to assist the woman at about 10.30am on Tuesday but she had managed to climb back to safety before they arrived.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 10.30am today, police received a report that a woman was on the wrong side of the railings on the Millennium Bridge.

"The woman shortly climbed back to safety and officers are currently carrying out enquiries to ensure her welfare."

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were supporting police at the scene.

Three fire engines and the fire boat were sent out.

The woman, or anyone who knows her, is asked to contact police via 101 and quote reference number 288 17/12/19.
