Emergency services join Nicola Sturgeon in minute silence in tribute to key workers who have died during outbreak

Scottish emergency services joined the First Minister in a sombre tribute to those NHS and key workers who have lost their lives to coronavirus.

Standing outside St Andrew’s House, in Edinburgh, Nicola Sturgeon marked the one minute silence joined by the health secretary, chief medical officer and chief nursing officer.

A short ceremony was held at Holyrood ahead of the silence, led by Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh, with a representative from each of the five parties also present.

The silence was also marked across the country by staff from emergency services.

Health workers, fire and rescue services and police all took part.

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Emergency Department stood outside to pay tribute to those who have tragically died of the virus.

Staff at the Scottish Ambulance Service stations in Aberdeen and Falkirk also observed the silence by standing outside lined up before the ambulance vehicles.

They joined people across the UK who paused for a minute in acknowledgment of the sacrifice made by those on the front line, in roles ranging from doctors and nurses to carers, cleaners, porters and bus drivers.

Sturgeon previously encouraged Scots to join in stating: "The silence will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have died as a result of their work to serve, care for and save others and it will be a further reminder that of all the duties Government bares during a situation like this, the most vital is our obligation to keep care and health workers safe."
