Coastguard teams, police and fire crews have been at the River Leven in a desperate bid to locate the girl after receiving a report at around since 6:45pm.

Helicopters have also been spotted in the sky above the West Dunbartonshire town.

It is understood rescuers were able to locate another youngster in the water with a frantic search ongoing for the other child, believed to be 12-years-old.

Balloch Bridge is now closed along with the main road through the town.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.46pm on Sunday, August 9 to reports of a person in the water in Balloch.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene at Balloch Bridge.

“Firefighters currently remain on the scene working to assist their emergency service partners.”

West Dunbartonshire Police confirmed roads have been closed off in the area.

They tweeted: "Motorists are advised that Balloch Road is currently closed between the A82 roundabout and Carrochan Road, Balloch due to an ongoing police incident at the River Leven. Please use an alternative route."
