Emergency services in frantic search for girl missing in water at Balloch

Emergency services are scrambling to locate a young girl who is missing in the water at Balloch.

Coastguard teams along with police and fire crews were seen at around 6.45pm as they carried out a search of the River Leven.

Helicopters have also been spotted in the sky above the West Dunbartonshire town at the foot of Loch Lomond.

It is feared that an 12-year-old girl is missing.

It's believed rescuers were able to locate another youngster in the water with a frantic search ongoing for the other child.

The incident has seen Balloch Bridge closed along with the main road through the town.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.46pm on Sunday, August 9 to reports of a person in the water in Balloch.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene at Balloch Bridge.

“Firefighters currently remain on the scene working to assist their emergency service partners.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.

Motorists have been advised that Balloch Road is currently closed between the A82 roundabout and Carrochan Road, Balloch due to the police incident at the River Leven.
