Emergency services descend on River Tay in Perth

Emergency services descended on the River Tay in Perth last night after passersby heard a man shouting for help.

Water rescue teams from across Tayside rushed to Tay Street at around 6pm on Sunday, December 29.

They were joined by specialist police units and a special incident response ambulance crew, with a search and rescue helicopter joining the search later to floodlight the river.

Emergency officers were seen scanning the edges of the river with torches, with others searching the river on a boat.

This comes after members of the public reported hearing a man shouting for help in the area.

Members of the public who have any information about last night’s incident are being urged to contact the police.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland’s Tayside division said: “Police Scotland alongside Scottish Fire and Rescue, Coastguard and Air Sea Rescue are conducting searches of the River Tay in relation to a male shouting for help heard in the vicinity of Perth Bridge (A85) between 5.45pm and 6pm [on Sunday, December 29].

“Any persons who may have any information in relation to this are asked to contact police on 101 and quote incident number 2787.”
