Emergency services descend on Ainsdale beach as report of human remains found to be incorrect

A police patrol was sent to Ainsdale beach this morning after reports of a possible human body part washed up on the sand.

A member of the public spotted something just before the tide was at its peak.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency confirmed beach lifeguards, Southport Coastguard Rescue Team and Merseyside Police responded to reports of a possible human body part washed up on Ainsdale beach, just before 11.40am today (Tuesday).

Police forensics teams later confirmed it to be animal remains.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "We were contacted by coastguard at 11.45am. The coastguard reported that a member of the public had handed in an item into the lifeguard hut at Ainsdale beach.

"A patrol officer was able to confirm it is believed to be part of a marine animal."
