Emergency services deal with bin lorry fire in North Shields amid heatwave pressures

A refuse vehicle caught fire while on the road in North Shields during the ongoing heatwave.

Emergency crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police attended the scene on Tynemouth Road in North Shields from approximately 2.20pm onwards. A refuse vehicle was reported to have caught fire.

Two crews from Tynemouth Community Fire Station were dispatched to the scene and the road has been closed while emergency services were in attendance.

Drone footage captured by member of the public, Mike Adie, showed firefighters tackling the blaze which was visible at the rear of the vehicle. There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said at the time: "We can confirm we are currently in attendance of refuse vehicle on fire on Tynemouth Road in North Shields.

"Our fire control received a call at 2:22pm and two crews from Tynemouth Community Fire Station were on scene in a matter of minutes to start extinguishing the fire.

"Due to the nature of the fire, we ask that residents in the area keep their windows and doors closed and stay away from the area as roads are closed."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: “Shortly after 3.10pm today (Tuesday), police received a report of a vehicle on fire on Tynemouth Road, North Tyneside.

“It was reported that a refuse vehicle was on fire. The road has been closed while emergency services attend the scene.”
