Emergency services called to woman on wrong side of bridge railings in North Shields

A woman was brought to safety after being seen on the wrong side of bridge railings in North Shields.

Police received a report of concern for the woman at the marina in North Shields at 11.15pm on Wednesday.

Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service including a Hazard Response Team, and firefighters attended the scene.

Specialists spoke with the woman and she was brought to safety after 1am. She was left in the care of medical professionals.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 11.15pm on Wednesday we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman at the marina in North Shields.

"Emergency services attended and found the woman was on the wrong side of the railings of a bridge on Chirton Dene Way.

"Specialist negotiators spoke to the woman in question and she was brought to safety at about 1.20am before being left in the care of medical professionals.”

A spokesperson for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said they were called to assist with a police incident.

Eight Brigade members attended the call and were on scene for almost two hours before the woman was brought to safety.
