Emergency services called to help women on Tyne Bridge and Swing Bridge just minutes apart

Emergency services were called to help two women on bridges at the Newcastle Quayside just minutes apart.

Just before 4pm on Wednesday, police and paramedics were called to the scene after reports that a woman had fallen into the River Tyne from the Swing Bridge.

A double-crewed ambulance and four resources from the North East Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team attended.

After a rescue operation, the woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) where it is believed she was in a stable condition.

Just minutes after the first call, police were also alerted to a separate incident involving concern for a woman on the Tyne Bridge.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 4pm yesterday (Wednesday) we received a report that a woman had fallen from the Swing Bridge, Newcastle.

“Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to the RVI to be checked over.

“At 4.05pm yesterday we received an unrelated report of concern for the welfare of a different woman on the Tyne Bridge.

“Emergency services attended and the woman was brought to safety.”
