Emergency services called to fire in popular Newport club

Staff and punters were evacuated from a popular bar in Newport after a fire broke out in the kitchen.

A kitchen grill in the Breeze Bar, on Cambrian Road in the city centre, caught fire on Thursday evening just before the bar was due to show the Liverpool v Newcastle match.

Crews from South Wales Fire Service confirmed they were called to the venue just before 7.30pm and were able to promptly put the fire out.

A spokesman for the fire service said crews stayed at the scene for over an hour to tidy up and follow safety procedures.

They added that people had been cleared from the building before crews had arrived by "following their own evacuation procedures". No one was hurt.

Video footage from the scene showed a relatively empty street on Thursday night as two fire engines parked up along each side of Breeze Bar. The bar is on the Queensway end of Cambrian Road and is sandwiched between a Wetherspoons pub and a Ladbrokes betting shop.

It had advertised the 8pm Liverpool v Newcastle match on its Facebook page offering pints for £1.95 on Thursday night.
