Emergency services called to Edward Colston plinth as ground stained with blood

Emergency services were called after an incident led to bloodstains on the ground next to the city centre's Edward Colson plinth.

Two ambulances and at least two police cars attended Colston Avenue shortly after 5.30pm yesterday (July 28), following an incident which appeared to involve an electric scooter.

They were called to the area where 17th-century slave trader Colston's statue was toppled last month.

Pictures which circulated last night on social media showed a large amount of blood on the ground by the empty pedestal.

Emergency services have confirmed it was a "medical incident" and a patient was taken to hospital.

A witness said: "A police officer was chatting to a young group of lads and another officer then wheeled an electric scooter into the police van.

"At first I thought it might have been a clash between protesters or something like that, but when I got closer I realised the incident was unrelated to the plinth, or at least it appeared that way."

A South Western Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 5.32pm to an incident on Colston Avenue and attended with two ambulances. One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment."

And an Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: "We picked up on CCTV cameras that the ambulance service were dealing with a medical incident at about 5.35pm and we attended to provide support."

South Western Ambulance Service has been approached for further details about what happened.
